When I've had the opportunity to prevent a crime, I've felt something more like a sense of relief than anything like gratification. I said there was a "satisfaction" to solving a mystery, but that's intellectual and after the fact. "Instant gratification" makes it sound like the confrontation itself is the motivation, and not the outcome, I guess.
